GitNotifier Privacy Policy
Effective October 3, 2026
GitNotifier is a Mac menu bar app, with an optional Safari extension, made by Vea Software LLC. It shows your unread GitHub notifications. This policy explains what information GitNotifier handles and where it goes.
In short: GitNotifier does not collect any data. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no third-party code. Vea Software never receives your information. GitNotifier only talks to GitHub.
Your GitHub personal access token
To read your notifications, GitNotifier needs a GitHub personal access token that you create and enter yourself. The token is stored in your Mac's Keychain. It is sent only to GitHub (api.github.com), over an encrypted HTTPS connection, to fetch your notifications and, if you choose "Mark All as Read", to mark them read. It is never sent anywhere else.
Your notifications
GitNotifier downloads your notifications from GitHub and shows them in its menu. They are kept in memory while the app is running. On your Mac, GitNotifier also stores:
- your unread count, in the Keychain, so the Safari extension can show it without contacting GitHub again;
- identifiers of notifications it has already seen, so it doesn't alert you twice about the same activity;
- your settings, such as how often to check and whether notifications are muted.
None of this leaves your Mac. If you turn on system notifications, macOS shows them locally.
Safari extension
The optional Safari extension does not have access to the websites you visit. It can't read web pages or your browsing history. It only shows the unread count on its toolbar button and opens github.com/notifications when you click the button.
GitHub
Your use of GitHub, including the requests GitNotifier makes on your behalf, is covered by GitHub's Privacy Statement.
Deleting your data
To stop GitNotifier from using your token, clear it in GitNotifier's Settings and click Save, or revoke it at github.com/settings/tokens. Everything GitNotifier stores is on your Mac, so no data held by Vea Software needs to be deleted.
Children's privacy
GitNotifier does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
